The EU’s Digital Identity Wallet

In Episode 120 of Alles Legal – Fintech Law in Brief, lawyer and partner Peter Frey from Annerton joins host Dana Wondra from Payment & Banking to explore the EUDI-Wallet: a new EU-wide system for managing digital identities under the revised eIDAS Regulation 2.0.

Peter explains who can issue such wallets, what security requirements must be met, and how the EUDI-Wallet could reshape processes such as identification, contract signing and authentication – affecting citizens, banks and public authorities alike.

Unified, Secure and Interoperable

Far more than a conventional app, the EUDI-Wallet is a legally anchored identity and data management system. Its purpose is to eliminate media discontinuities, protect user data, and put individuals in full control of their personal information. The underlying role model differentiates between issuers, attribute providers, and so-called relying parties – such as banks or insurers.

All wallet providers must meet high security standards and obtain governmental certification. While private providers may also develop wallets, they require additional state-level approval beyond the basic certification.

The EUDI-Wallet will enable users to prove their identity, age, residence, account information, and even provide a legally binding digital signature. Especially for banks, this could be a gamechanger – streamlining KYC and SCA processes and reducing operational costs.

Still, challenges remain: technical integration into existing systems and unresolved legal questions, particularly concerning liability between banks, wallet providers and customers. The Wallet is expected to launch by the end of 2026.
