🎧In the fifth and final episode of our EUDI-Wallet series, Peter Frey, partner at Annerton, and host Dana Wondra (Payment & Banking) discuss the key findings and challenges surrounding the European Digital Identity Wallet. Topics include opportunities for financial institutions, legal uncertainties, technical requirements and political momentum. – Tune in now!
More than a technical tool
The EUDI-Wallet aims to establish a legally recognised, EU-wide digital identity infrastructure. Users retain control over their data (Self-Sovereign Identity) and can selectively share it – for example, for KYC processes or signing contracts.
Opportunities for the financial industry
According to Peter Frey, the EUDI-Wallet could enable banks and FinTechs to implement standardised and seamless identification and authentication processes. This leads to time and cost savings and opens up new possibilities for digital onboarding – especially across borders.
Unresolved legal questions
Despite its potential, several legal uncertainties remain. For instance: Must payment service providers sign outsourcing agreements with each wallet provider? How can the wallet be integrated into KYC processes, given that current and upcoming AML laws lack clarity? Liability issues are also still unresolved.
Technical and political dynamics
Beyond legal issues, Peter Frey stresses the need for a unified technical approach. The system will only be successful if wallets are truly interoperable, secure and user-friendly. Widespread adoption by major platforms, authorities and companies will be a key factor for success.
Conclusion
It is time for financial institutions to adapt their processes, assess legal implications and prepare technical integrations. The EUDI-Wallet is coming – those who act early can reduce compliance risks and unlock its full potential for digital customer journeys.
